Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions that people with penises around the world experience. A 2019 review suggests that anywhere between 3% and 76.5% of the world’s male population experiences ED — especially as they get older.

With BlueChew, ED tablets arrive by mail in a predetermined quantity and don’t require an in-person visit to a doctor or pharmacy.

Read on to learn how BlueChew’s subscription service works, some pros and cons to keep in mind, and how BlueChew compares in price with other ED medications.

BlueChew sells chewable tablets of sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil, which are generic versions of popular brand-name ED medications like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. However, while the active ingredients used in those brand-name drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat ED, the chewable tablets and the dose strengths offered through BlueChew haven’t been separately approved by the FDA for ED treatment.

BlueChew is an online subscription service that delivers prescription ED medication within the United States. The company is designed for men who:

  • want to have more confidence in bed
  • don’t want to visit a doctor in person
  • have a hard time swallowing pills

When you sign up for the subscription, you’re connected to a licensed medical professional who provides a digital consultation to learn more about your symptoms and medical history.

If ED treatment is approved by that medical professional, a prescription will be written for one of the medications that BlueChew offers.

Each month, BlueChew ships ED medication right to your door in the quantity you select. You have three medication options — sildenafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil — and can choose from four monthly subscription plans ranging in price from $25 to $130.

Pros

  • Medications come in chewable tablet form.
  • There’s no need for an in-person doctor visit.
  • The medication arrives by mail in discreet packaging.
  • It’s cheaper than brand-name ED medications.
  • It’s made in the United States.
  • It’s available in all states (except North Dakota), along with Puerto Rico and Guam.

Cons

  • The chewable tablets and dose strengths aren’t FDA-approved (but their active ingredients are FDA-approved).
  • You need to pay online.
  • It’s not available in North Dakota, and does not ship internationally.

Monthly subscription rates

BlueChew offers monthly subscriptions based on your needs. There are four different plans per medication that relate to how many pill packs are sent to you each month. It is also worth noting that BlueChew offers a discounted rate on your first shipment to all first-time buyers. These prices don’t include shipping and tax:

  • Sildenafil: This medication is available in 30mg and 45 mg doses. Plans include 6, 10, 17, or 34 pill packs a month, costing from $25 to $120. One of their best-selling plans includes 17 packs of 30mg chewables for $55 per month.
  • Tadalafil: This medication is available in 6mg and 9 mg doses. You can receive 4, 7, 14, or 28 pill packs a month, ranging from $25 to $125. One of their most popular plans includes 14 packs of 6mg chewables for $60 per month.
  • Vardenafil: This medication is only available in 8mg doses and has a mint flavor. Plans include 4, 8, 15, or 30 pill packs a month and cost $25 to $130. Their best-selling plan includes 15 packs for $70 per month.

BlueChew is a prescription-based business, so you can’t return your medications or get a refund.

BlueChew instead encourages customers to let the BlueChew medical team know if your current dosage or subscription isn’t working for you. They can review your information and see whether another treatment may work better.

Is BlueChew covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, don’t usually cover the cost of ED medications. Some Medicare Part C and Part D plans may cover the cost of some versions of generic ED medications.

BlueChew sells three types of ED medications: sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil. These medications have comparable levels of effectiveness and safety for treating ED.

But a 2017 study* comparing tadalafil with sildenafil for the treatment of ED found that tadalafil produced more favorable psychological outcomes.

Researchers cited that men who took tadalafil didn’t feel as much pressure, urgency, or needs to plan before sexual activity as those who took sildenafil.

*Note: The doses in these studies are FDA-approved doses, not the dose strengths offered by BlueChew.

BlueChew vs. Viagra

Sildenafil is the active ingredient found in Viagra. Sildenafil has been FDA approved since 2016 to be sold under its generic name. While BlueChew’s chewable ED treatment is not independently FDA approved, it contains the same active ingredient as Viagra.

BlueChew’s sildenafil subscription comes in 30- and 45-mg tablets. Viagra comes in three doses: 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.

Another difference is that Viagra is a tablet that you have to swallow, while sildenafil from BlueChew is chewable.

The primary active ingredients in BlueChew — sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil — are FDA approved for treating ED.

The tablets are made by compounding the active ingredients into a chewable tablet form. This tablet, nor the doses BlueChew offers, are FDA approved. BlueChew also doesn’t provide any information on why the doses for each pill were selected and how effective they are.

PDE-5 inhibitors lower your blood pressure throughout your body. PDE-5 inhibitors are most commonly prescribed for those who have ED caused by poor blood flow to the penis.

They can be dangerous if you have certain underlying health conditions. Avoid PDE-5 inhibitors if you’ve had:

Talk with a doctor before introducing BlueChew to your sex life. If you haven’t already received a diagnosis of ED, a doctor may be able to suggest other treatment options based on your health history.

Additionally, a doctor may deter you from using BlueChew if they don’t think it’s a good option for you.

BlueChew’s chewable sildenafil and Viagra contain the same active ingredient and function fairly similarly — they both improve blood flow. So the effectiveness largely depends on the person taking it.

The difference between the two is that BlueChew is an online service, provides chewable tablets, and offers 30-mg and 45-mg options. Viagra comes in 25-mg, 50-mg, and 100-mg options. With BlueChew, medications will be sent directly to your doorstep.

ED is the most common sexual issue that men experience. BlueChew is a monthly subscription-based service that provides chewable tablets to manage ED.

BlueChew sells sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil tablets, which are the active ingredients in Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, respectively. The service includes an online consultation with a doctor who can recommend the dose and type of medication you should take.
